Guaynaa And Play N Skillz ‘Pusilinda’ Is A Cool + Sexy Concept, But Something Is Off
DIVERSITY.
The beauty of Reggaeton is that no topic is off limitS, especially sexy ones. I personally enjoy songs that are explicit and push the boundaries of conversation and understanding in regards to femme’s sexual agency. in this instance, “pusilinda”, which celebrates the beauty of a woman's vagina, endorses sexy lyricism by adults for adults i’m all for it. As i watched THE VIDEO, SOMETHING BECAME APPARENT: A LACK OF DIVERSITY BOTH VISUALLY AND LYRICALLY and the fact that men are defining what a “pretty pussy looks like,” The accompanying music video features beautiful women, all WHO ARE fair-skinned which excludes the RANGE of women who enjoy and HAVE contributeD to the genre. This oversight is indicative of a broader trend within reggaeton where ITS roots and influences are often sidelined in favor of more Eurocentric standards.
Guaynaa and play n skillz are not the first, nor will they be the last. historically, reggaeton artists exhibit this pattern of exclusion. The whitewashing in reggaeton has manifested in various ways, most recently reflected in thIS song AND I’M SURE BY NEXT WEEK A DIFFERENT EXAMPLE WILL BE RELEASED, SO WHY POINT THIS ONE OUT IN PARTICULAR? WHAT I’M MOST INTRIGUED BY IN THIS INSTANCE IS NOT THAT “PRETTY PUSSY” IS THE TOPIC OF CONVERSATION, BUT THe danger that ripple effects by the idea of a specific type of vagina BEING PRAISED —being one that is pink inside. THIS IDEA, When paired with the fair-skinned models in the video, it becomes clear who the target audience is: those who fit or aspire to Eurocentric beauty standards.
IN THIS EXAMPLE, ADVOCATING FOR A RANGE OF WOMEN DOES ONE THING AND ONE THING ONLY: DECENTERS A “PERFECT FLOWER” FROM THE SO CALLED SOCIETAL GOAL THAT WOMEN SHOULD “ASPIRE FOR”. IN A WORLD WHERE GENITAL MUTILATION OCCURS IN REMOTE PARTS OF THE WORLD, IT’D BE NICE TO GET A “PUSSY POWER” ANTHEM FROM MEN–THAT DOESN’T SUBCONSCIOUSLY AND INADVERTENTLY COINCIDE WITH THE CULTURE OF VIOLENCE TOWARDS WOMEN WHO ARE DIFFERENT.
“GATA YOU’RE THINKING TOO HARD” I WISH THAT I WAS, THE REALITY IS IT DOESN’T BRING ME ANY JOY TO DISCUSS THIS AT ALL. THE REALITY ALSO IS THAT IN LATIN AMERICA THERE’S A SOCIAL HIERARCHY THAT CREATES STEREOTYPES OF BLACK WOMEN BEING “QUITA HOMBRES” AS WELL AS ‘great for LABOR’, MIXED WOMEN BEING ‘GREAT FOR SEX’ AND WHITE WOMEN ‘EXCEPTIONAL FOR MARRIAGE’. There is also a social landscape that yes is shifting, and yet continues to promote whiteness as beautiful and blackness as ugly. MY SENTIMENTS DON’T COME FROM THE DESIRE OF PROMOTING “black pussy” persay, i’d just like people to think IF A PUSSY THAT IS PINK IN THE MIDDLE IS CONSIDERED “PUSILINDA” WHAT IS CONSIDERED “PUSIFEA?” AND WHY ARE MEN DEFINING THIS?
Guaynaa and Play N Skillz are both undeniably talented artists, and "Pusilinda" is a catchy and fun track to listen to at first glance, in theory. in reality it has the great potential to be associated with a dangerous narrative that is anti-black because The truth is, whenever the idea of beauty is promoted, simultaneously, even without a person being conscious of it, ugliness is being promoted as well.
what could’ve saved the song, is literally a range of women, and lyrics that acknowledge the different type of vaginal flowers so-to-speak that exist. I can imagine some arguing that the song shouldn’t exist altogether, and to that i’d say I think its okay for men to acknowledge what they like but when its for the masses, consider all of the angles especially when it comes to women. women, who are statistically known to be murdered for beauty, or even lack thereof. Latinidad loves to promote the concept of “one for all” but history shows us- that pov often leaves marginalized people in the dust
In future projects, it is hoped that artists will consider the importance of MESSAGING. Especially when attempting to curate ideas as explicitly as women WITH "Pusilinda."
